LETS GO GATORS CLAP-CLAP-CLAPCLAPCLAP LETS GO GATORS CLAP-CLAP-CLAPCLAPCLAP!
This is what I’ll remember most about last night’s title game. Yeah, Joakim Noah’s first half block party was nice. Taureen Green proved to me he’s this year Deron Williams, an amazing passer who can stick some D as well. And Al Horford has been a monster in the paint all year long. But the UF cheering section actually made me think I was watching a, imagine this, a college basketball game. Too many times, these tournament games are filled with local fans who just want to see some basketball and they really don’t give it that Cameron Crazy/Orange Krush feel. But the Rowdy Reptiles definitely showed up and were representing in their full orange and blue glory. Even Albert was there. And when the game was over, before he even embraced Coach Donovan, Noah went over to the cheering section and did the Gator chomp with all of the fans. Last year, I must admit I didn’t really want to watch UNC celebrate after they defeated my Illini. But the Heels didn’t embrace their sky-blue brethren the way the Gators did in Indy last night. So much for Florida being a football school. There hasn’t been a trophy hoisted in the Swamp since the ’97 Danny Wuerffel led Gators smashed Florida State in the Sugar Bowl to take the National Championship. Chris Leak and the boys better have a quick night of celebrating and then get back to work. The opener is about five months away. (Sept 2 vs. Southern Mississippi in the Swamp).
While having a school that I endorse winning a championship is a fantastic experience, I’d have to say the highlight of my day was the opening of the Cubs 2006 campaign with a 16 to 7 win over the Reds. I was unable to watch the game from start to finish, but I was notified during my psychology class that Juan Pierre led off the season with a triple, and I knew that it was all good from their. My boy Matt Murton, who I was telling people about last June before he was on the team, hit a three-run homer. Big Z (Carlos Zambrano) had some problems, but I fully expect him to get back on track soon. And if I had to find a positive out of Z’s performance, it was that he proved that Ron Santo is in mid-season form. I heard this inside analysis on my way home from class:
"I think Zambrano can be a great strikeout pitcher, but to do that, he has to throw strikes."
Anyways, they go back at it again on Wednesday in Cincinnati, then an off day, followed by the home opener versus the Redbirds.
