I realized last night at around 11:30 while watching an episode of “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” that there has been a lack of quality commercials this year. Usually about 90% of ads are garbage, which is why I normally flip channels when the program I’m watching goes to commercial. But every year there’s at least one worth watching. Last year it was that Nike basketball “Second Coming” piece, with LeBron, Kobe, Steve Nash, and seven other NBA stars playing ball in an airport hanger. This winter though is lacking in a quality commercial.
Because of that, I was going to create a list of the greatest sports commercials ever. Yet nearly every great ad I thought of was a Michael Jordan spot. So instead here’s a list of my five favorite MJ ads.
5- Nothin but Net
I was surprised to learn this, but I read that this was the first Jordan ad ever to premier during the Super Bowl. It sure was a great one. Even now, at their old age, I would still pay good money to watch Jordan and Bird play H.O.R.S.E.
4- Classic Tale
You know you have made it big time when a full minute ad is made that doesn’t show your picture, doesn’t have any video of you, doesn’t even say your full name. Yet everybody watching knows exactly who its about. Genius stuff.
3- If I Could Be Like Mike
From an ad that gives no direct mention of Michael Jordan to one that sings all about him. The lyrics might be corny, but that’s OK. This ad proved to the world that Mike wasn’t just a Chicago-land star or even national. MJ was world-wide.
2-Let Your Game Speak
Rarely is there a commercial that- when it finishes- you say to yourself ‘I wish that had been about two minutes longer.’ But this is one of those. When I first saw this ad a few years ago, it gave me the chills. It was almost like Nike was giving a big Thank You to everybody who had watched Jordan’s career.
1- 23 vs 39
Not only the best Jordan commercial ever, I’m nominating this for the very best commercial ever PERIOD. An absolute masterpiece. Seeing Mike versus Mike is the closest thing we’ll ever see to a perfect basketball game. The strange thing is, I loved Jordan on the Bulls, love watching his tapes from the mid-80s, love the way he played in his early days. Yet I find myself rooting for the 39 year old Mike, the one in the Wizards shorts. I don’t know why.
Bears play tomorrow night, even though their performance in the 4th quarter last Sunday should ban them from stepping on a football field for another three weeks. Still, because of the hardships the Redskins have dealt with, you gotta like our chances. (Full picks coming later in the week)

I read your article on Chicagosportsreview.om about college football and really enjoyed it. i was wondering if you would answer some questions for me. I just want some opinions on the bcs for an article im writing for class. thanks
just shoot the answers to my inbox at barraza88@gmail.com thanks
First and foremost, do you think the BCS system works?
What can be done to improve the system or do you think its so bad we should go back to the way it was before it was instilled?
What were some of the biggest mistakes the system has made?
Would a playoff system be a better way to crown a champion?
Do you think money is talks to much when it comes to college football?
